Fw 190 wrecks found at Rieti by MAAF Technical Intelligence

Rieti: landing area 1,000 metres x 60 metres.

"It was finally possible to enter Rieti with a vehicle yesterday and the airfield and buildings in town were inspected. The airfield was finally left by the Germans about May 18th but not used operationally for about a fortnight before that. FW 190's used to take off from here but never stay very long. Some dispersal areas in the orchards to the NW were under construction but not completed in time. (This information from locals).

All the A/D buildings were demolished and a number of Fw 190's were dispersed around the perimeter, all uniformly destroyed before leaving. Some were without engines but all were burned out very completely as to the cockpit section and scattered as by an explosion ... mostly only tail units and outer sections of mainplanes were found."

"F/L. James is reporting on documentary finds, but they included a number of signals giving works numbers and call signs of missing a/c and the call signs of all the SG 4 Fw 190's. This must be obtained from CSDIC as soon as possible for the production people at AM.

F/L. James also found the official markings for Italian Fascist-Republican a/c."

NOTE: if James' report survives, it does not seem to be in any of the CSDIC files that I have seen. From the researcher's point of view this is a pity.

DAMAGE

No sources have come to light to show which of these aircraft were destroyed in the attack of 20 April 1944.
