Deciphered Luftwaffe messages identified many aircraft on or off the strength of the units based in Southern France in August 1944. Daily strength returns used a system of apparently arbitrary four-letter codes to denote different reasons why an aircraft was off strength (e.g. KLEP, BESU, MADE, GENE, FENE, EMIS, BCDI) but the Allies were not able to deduce their meaning. All sub-types below are as given in the original messages.
