Less of this article than usual has been pieced together from individual ULTRA signals. For the overall framework of events, I have used the series of daily reports on “German Naval Air Activity” which synthesised ULTRA, Y-Service, PoW and other information. Despite their title, these reports cover just about any flight known to have crossed the coast of occupied Europe. In any event, 1943 ULTRA is largely unfamiliar territory for me, with the more familiar reporting numbering systems only introduced toward the end of the year.

ULTRA naval messages are available online and free of charge from the National Archives and I have made some use of them, but where aviation-related messages are concerned one is looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. A typical file covers three or four days and contains about 1,000 messages, most only a few words long, and perhaps two of them will relate to Kdo. Rastedter. Incidentally, Western Front naval ULTRA for the period has serial numbers in the format ZIP/ZTPG/[five-digit number]. Z or ZIP seems to have been the Admiralty’s term for special intelligence and ZTPG may = ZIP Teleprint Germany. As I found from looking at the wrong files, there are additional series for U-boats (ZIP/ZTPGU), the Mediterranean (ZIP/ZTPGM) the Italian Regia Marina (ZTPGI) and the Russian Front (ZIP/ZTPGR).
